Xie Zhongbo, Zhang Yawen advance at badminton tourney

BEIJING, Oct. 11 (Xinhua) -- China's second-seeded Xie Zhongbo and Zhang Yawen easily brushed aside compatriot Wei Shifeng and SuLan in straight sets, securing a spot in the quarterfinals of mixed doubles at Beijing International Badminton Tournment here on Thursday.

Zhang and Xie coasted to a 21-13 lead in the first set with Zhang controlling the net and Xie providing both power and touch shots from the rear.

The second set saw the well-cooperated pair maintain their dominance to land the 21-6 victory in 21 minutes after the two pairs had engaged in a driving rally.

"I think good communication with each other on court is our advantage, we understand each other quite well," said Xie Zhongbo, adding that "lots of training ahead of the match also count."

A total of 14 pairs joined Thursday's mixed doubles round of 16as Malaysian Koo Kien Keat and Wong Pei Tty have withdrawn from the game, leaving the mixed doubles an all-China affair.

The tournament is being held at the Beijing University of Technology (BUT) Gymnasium, the badminton venue for 2008 Beijing Olympics.
